When I was approached by a good friend of mine about the upcoming Love & Money exhibition, it came to me as a personal discovery that upon knowing what love can do, people can’t actually talk about love. It’s intangible, untouchable and most of all unpredictable. But this thing called love can also be felt, shared and disengaged altogether. It has the power to pull two strangers into the pool of romance or make the inseparable separable and the unbreakable breakable.
Girls, young and mature alike, fall in and out of love for the same person over and over again but can never resist themselves from thinking about the past – how foolishness got them into trouble when all they wanted was to leave a message under this cute boy’s desk but had always got into the hands of their teacher.
What is more embarrassing than to know that your so-called best friend betrayed your friendship to be with the guy you liked so much? Such adventures of the damsel in distress, no matter what, get washed away down the drain as time goes by because when you think back, you already got the man of your life by your side.
But there’s another love that’s infinite and can only be admired from a distance. This love is passion for the arts. This time, British Council Malaysia is giving local designers the freedom to express their love for art and design.
Event: Love & Money Exhibition - The Best of British Design Now

Pecha Kucha Night will be the highlight of Love & Money exhibition as and local designers gather for the first time in KL for a public forum to tell the other side of their story – how they have managed to strike a balance between their love for design and making a living out of it. It’s gonna be a blast as a huge flow of visitors is expected on that day. Love & Money exhibition will be held on the 3rd floor of Avenue K on May26 and June23, 2007 (both Saturdays).
Featured are UK designer of the year 2006 Jamie Hewlett (creator of Gorillaz) and tribal deco jewellery Shaun Leane. We are looking forward to many other designers from the and around to take part in this event but as from my list, those invited by British Council are JayLimdesign, Urban Creatures, 84Cube and MAWS.
It’s open to public so keep your digital camera in handy when you get there. Feel a different kind of love expressed by these designers through speech and their products so remember to carry some cash with you too. It could be love at first sight!
See you there,
Viv
Here’s another chance to lose that extra pounds – go travelling. And, travelling to the South I went with a group of nine designer friends.
By lunchtime on a cloudy Friday afternoon, we gathered at the bus terminal at Puduraya for the 2.45pm ride to Johore Bahru.
I didn’t know how heavy the rain was outside but it sure fired down like cats and dogs until we reached our destination. Droplets of rain cooled the air and formed mist on the window signalling the dawning of day.
The air-conditioning blasted to the maximum while T-shirt clad Black Fryday, Grotx and Manual Epoch members had a hard time dealing with the cold temperature. By loosening up my shoes had made this journey a comfy one with the company of cotton-like clouds floating in mid air.
I haven’t been wearing a watch around my wrist because I hate looking at the time and seeing it tick by the seconds irks me terribly. Thus, I’d rather myself be that weather forecast and enjoy every silly moment foreseeing what was to come ahead of us (no doubt it’s a way to test my patience). It was nearly 8pm when we arrived at the terminal in Larkin where Ming Hua and his girlfriend, Sandy of Human Dizobey welcomed us with their newly polished Wira.
Soon enough, we arrived at the main entrance of Southern College in the next morning. More spacious than I thought, the campus could have easily fit in 300 people in the amphitheatre for the designer conference – but only a fraction of it showed up.
It must have been that ‘roti prata’ and ‘milo O ais’ that I had for breakfast; I was sworn in by diarrhoea.
By the time Jay was up next for his speech after Black Fryday, I didn’t know how he convinced me to realise his dream of speaking in public. However, I gladly and willingly gave in. There was no reason for me to withdraw from the public eye; stupid of me from doing so because I meant to work in this line!
Now, I can tell that emceeing might be just for me. But most importantly, I picked up the courage to speak in front of a bunch of SPM leavers who hadn’t a single idea why they were here at the first place.
From what I heard throughout the conference, Urban Creatures (UC) presented motion graphics with a humble tone in his voice and the gesture of an experienced lecturer.
“Perfection is just a thought,” said Chun Woei, the founder of UC because “your work changes each time you work on it.”
Also present were Defy, Bunny Egg, Eightyfourcube and They. A bazaar was held at the college lobby with the company of other designers like Phobia and Hanadu (new member).
Si Jun, the boyish guy with a dash of mystery written on his face, took us to McDonald’s for lunch. It was a happy moment for us all because Si Jun finally made it to Urban Collective’s Fresh Ink, something worth of a celebration.
To end the day, we had Laksa noodles and clams fresh from the sea at a hawker stall operated by a friend Si Jun’s. We dared not eat too much of clams for fear that we’d have a four-hour terror ride back to the city of at 6.30am the day after.
Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to lose that extra pound as I’m already underweight but I had a good bowl of salad ala Johorian style sweet to my heart!
Cheers,
Viv
An old friend of mine came to Zouk to see how much I've changed. Apart from the shocking short mane I've been spotting with these days, I find a physical change in him instead. He was thin before like he never had one proper meal daily. Because he works in the perfume industry, it's all my guess that the fragrances have been keeping his appetite way out of balance. I'm starting to believe that going to the gym three days a week really helps to tighten the body muscles and reduce calories, but what happens when you stop being at it is what you get back in double. Kinda scary but financially tempting to try.
Fitness centres are gaining much popularity due to the constant celebrity endorsements and word-of-mouth ads. Even at my own space at home, I can hear my eldest brother lamenting over his inconsistency at the gym. Well, back to the topic, I'm glad to meet my old friend again and hope that he's having a wonderful time with his dearest at the gym. (Oh ya, I heard that gym's a good place to have a go at romance too!)
My boyfriend and I had opportunity to showcase our artwork and products in line with our tag "Your mind is Your First Enemy". Booth sale was brisk, however, the company of Gilamon, Homicydal, Lestat, 84Cube, and PhobiaKlik at the scene made it worthwhile having a ball together that night!
